Literacy Support Services

Literacy Support Services for Reading Success

Literacy Support Services provides personalized, 60-minute reading intervention sessions for students who need extra help in specific areas of literacy development. Each student begins with informal baseline reading assessments to identify individual strengths, skill gaps, and learning needs.

Using the assessment results, our team develops a customized literacy support plan built on effective, research-based instructional strategies. Instruction is individualized and designed to strengthen reading, comprehension, fluency, phonics, writing, and overall literacy confidence.

Sessions are typically recommended 1 to 2 times per week, with twice-weekly sessions often producing the strongest progress. Literacy support can be provided in a one-on-one setting to ensure focused attention and targeted instruction tailored to each child’s unique learning style and academic goals.

At Plum Tree Psychology, Literacy Support Services are provided by our Certified Academic Language Therapist (CALT).

A CALT is a professional credential to describe an individual who has the expertise to provide services to individuals who have difficulty acquiring the basic language skills necessary to read, write and spell. CALTs have a deep knowledge of the structure of the English language and the experience to apply these skills in creating an individualized plan for the remediation of dyslexia and related learning differences.

A CALT is more than a tutor. They are specially trained to work with students with dyslexia and related language-based learning differences.

Being a CALT ensures that an individual has completed a Comprehensive Therapist Level Multisensory Structured Language Training course that is Orton-Gillingham based and accredited by the International Multisensory Structured Language Education Council (IMSLEC).

The following is required to become a Certified Academic Language Therapist.

• 200 + Academic hours of dyslexia and related learning disability studies

• 700 Clinical teaching hours providing dyslexia therapy using Take Flight: A Comprehensive Intervention for Students with Dyslexia

• Passing the ALTA Competency Exam

• Review and acceptance into the Academic Language Therapy Association or ALTA

• Certified Academic Language Therapists are highly qualified in multisensory structured literacy, specifically for students with dyslexia, dysgraphia, and ADHD

These sessions aim to create a personalized learning plan for each student through personal evaluations, student inventories, and professional expertise

The goal of literacy support is to empower students with the essential reading, writing, and comprehension skills needed for academic and personal success. These sessions aim to create a personalized learning plan for each student by providing tailored instruction and resources. Literacy support helps learners overcome challenges, build confidence, and develop lifelong communication skills. It aims to enhance critical thinking, foster independence, and open opportunities for education, and social engagement. Ultimately, literacy support strives to bridge learning gaps and ensure that every individual can fully participate in and contribute to society.

The curriculum includes high-quality literature, meaningful stories, and innovative instructional methods. We want to equip students with the skills and strategies needed to tackle various aspects of literacy, thereby boosting their confidence and enhancing their academic performance. This targeted instruction aims to provide a “boost” for students in specific areas where they need improvement.

Yes. For students with a dyslexia diagnosis, Take Flight and JET are highly suggested to obtain best results as they are a frequent, intensive, structured and comprehensive. Our Literacy Support program may be more appropriate for students who cannot commit to the Take-Flight or JET curriculum and can only come in twice a week. Please keep in mind, LIteracy Support Services can custom tailored for your child’s areas of need and the hours can be more flexible for your family.
